When Back Loop Yarn Co. first showed me this extremely speckled colorway as part of their galaxy-inspired collection, I imagined a wave of tiny bobbles taking over the universe... the Astrophage of Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary consuming the stars.

This pattern is meant for your most highly speckled yarn and is intended to help you celebrate your favorite “difficult to use” skeins with something just beyond a plain stockinette sock. I hope you enjoy this pattern as much as I enjoyed creating it!

Yarn

You’ll need one (1) approx. 100 g highly variegated and/or speckled skein and one optional (1) 20 g mini of fingering weight yarn.

Needles & Notions

  • US 1/2.25 mm - 32” Circular for magic loop or preferred sock needles.

  • Stitch markers

  • Tapestry needle

  • Small gauge crochet hook (optional)

Gauge

US 1/2.25 mm - Approx. 7-8 sts x 12 rows per inch in stockinette (unblocked).

Sizes

1 (2, 3) to fit foot circumference of approximately 8-9” (9-10”, 10-11”)

Sample shown in Size 2, knit on US 1. Socks have negative ease with plenty of stretch to ensure a snug fit while still pulling easily over the heel.
